Governance Arrangements for Research Ethics Committees (GAfREC)

The harmonised UK version of the Governance Arrangements for Research Ethics Committees (GAfREC) was published on 09 May 2011 and will come into effect on 01 September 2011. This document is the policy of the UK Health Departments describing what is expected from the research ethics committees that review research proposals relating to areas of the UK Health Department’s responsibility. It also explains when review by these committees is required.

This algorithm is designed to assist researchers, sponsors and R&D offices in determining whether a project requires ethical review by a Research Ethics Committee under the UK Health Departments’ Governance Arrangements for Research Ethics Committees (GAfREC), a harmonised version of which came into effect on 1 September 2011.
